  • Achiote River Cafe

Grand Hyatt, 600 E. Market River Walk

    (210) 224-1234

Achiote's pan-Latino menu promises more than it delivers, but the roast pork with yellow rice is succulent and the homey rice pudding satisfying. Terrace seating on the River Walk is pleasant. -- Ron Bechtol (08/08)

  • Beto's Comida Latina

    8142 Broadway San Antonio

    (210) 930-9393

Empanada aficionados can breathe a sigh of relief: Beto's is back. Torta fanciers, on the other hand, are pissed. On the streamlined menu that accompanied Beto's move to scaled-down quarters up Broadway a piece from the previous location, the south-of-the-border subs are absent, and their vocal partisans have made management amply aware of their displeasure. Lay off, guys: Tortas, we're told, will be back. But nobody seems to be complaining about the missing platos. Roasted chicken, grilled whole fish, Beto's Mixed Grill are also AWOL, victims of the pared-down (but definitely not down-and-out) mindset that characterizes the new location. There is a new enthusiasm: Symbolic of tenant-landlord discord, an office building is said to soon be going up in Beto's old backyard. The current backyard, reclaimed from a parking lot and casually landscaped, is utterly anti-office in its laid-back demeanor. This is the place to chill, even in the heat. A mojito won't hurt at other times, despite, or perhaps because of, its reduced rum content.;- Ron Bechtol

  • La Marginal

    2447 Nacodoches San Antonio

    (210) 804-2242

At the 45th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, America's frigid foreign policy with the Carribbean island has barely changed. Despite Americans' demand for the country's rich and eclectic culture - and for all things Cuban - Americans are forbidden to spend money in Cuba, and the embargo has prevented Cuban products from legally entering the United States. At least one of the island's treasures - the Cuban sandwich - can be found at a few locations in San Antonio. La Marginal truthfully declares itself as having the "Best Cuban Sandwiches" on its window, in glass paint that mimics the hand-drawn styles of Cuban particular (semi-private) shops. The interior is a refreshing mix of 1950s colors, with seats of bright teal, and walls adorned with images from the former Spanish bastion.;- Abraham Mahshie

  • Nao: New World Flavors

    312 Pearl Pkwy San Antonio

    (210) 554-6484; (210) (FAX)

; As the CIA’s student-staffed flagship restaurant, Nao is intent on introducing to South Texas the flavors of a continent most of us know only through ceviches and caipirinhas; all of Latin America will eventually come under scrutiny, and the menu will change in response to the country currently in the spotlight. Expect unfamiliar ingredients, inventive preparations and to have your horizons expanded.

  • Si Senor Grill and Cantina

19239 Stone Oak Pkwy San Antonio

    (210) 404-1700; (210) (FAX)

; Si Señor could easily be a breezy, Mexican chain wannabe with nothing but décor to recommend it. But if they hold their ground against reluctant gringos, there will be much on the menu to investigate, including duck breast in herbal pipian, parchment-wrapped mixiotes, and perhaps even raviolis filled with earthy huitlacoche.

  • Tino's Seafood

6624 San Pedro Ave. San Antonio

    (210) 320-1272

Tino's Seafood is an amazing seafood restaurant that prides itself on providing high quality seafood at a reasonable price. We are fast, fresh and friendly and have received rave reviews by numerous publications. The jumbo shrimp is an amazing size and is straight from Tino's boats. This is the first of its kind in San Antonio and is unmatched. Tino's is originally from Brownsville, TX and has since expanded to locations in Brownsville, South Padre Island and now San Antonio, TX. Tino's Seafood has a variety of fried and non-fried food, from the fried jumbo shrimp specialty to the Shrimp Salad, Ceviche, Caldo de Mariscos, Peel and Eat Shrimp to the fried oysters. WE JUST ADDED three more non-breaded items including the White Fish in Garlic Sauce (Mojo de ajo), White Fish with White Wine Sauce (Pescado con vino), and the Fried Catfish with Teriyaki Sauce (El Bagre). Tino's has homemade cocktail sauce, tarter sauce and a secret habanero salsa recipe that'll make you cry! Claro que hablamos espanol y siempre estamos aqui para servirles.
